Fireflies

Text

So many friends in the park,
Smoke blowing over from France
I took a pipe from a hand
And somebody got up to dance
This American guy said
‘Chicago’s the place to be’
I looked all around and I said
This place looks OK to me

Julie changed her school uniform
For something longer in lace
There was light in her eyes
And a smile across her face
It was Prague Spring, Luther King
Ideas were everywhere
So much happening…

But it took so long to realise,
It took so long to realise
Big ideas and our bright, bright eyes
We were only fireflies
We were only fireflies

People marched in the street
Ten thousand in a Square
All trying to stop a war
Policemen running everywhere
Beaten down for civil right s
Had to dream so loud
On a hotel balcony
A gunman waits inside a crowd

But it took so long to realise,
It took so long to realise
Big ideas and our bright, bright eyes
We were only fireflies
We were only……

But we couldn’t hold onto it
Though the scent’s still in the air
Smoke may shift or disappear
Though it’s always spring somewhere
Grosvenor, Tiananmen, Tahir Square

It took the springs to realise,
It took the springs to realise
Big ideas and our bright, bright eyes
We need a world of fireflies
